Installation: Audi A8

In 1993, Audi introduced the Audi Space Frame, the first full aluminium body of the world, at the International Motorshow IAA in Frankfurt, Germany. With a weight of only 180 kilogramms and its polished surface, the coachwork is pending with doors wide open from the ceiling of the Schürerstand (stoker’s station). For sure, this installation in a sacral style has contributed to the former boiler house of Zollverein being reverently called a “cathedral of industrial culture”.

In comparison to a traditional steel body, the version made of aluminium saves up to 40 per cent of weight and thus contributes to reducing fuel consumption. In the worldwide automobile industry, the brand with the four rings has taken a leading role in lightweight construction. In 1999, the Audi Design Team received the honorary title “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year” for its continuously innovative design achievements at the highest level. It’s a distinction which stands out from all Red Dot Awards since no designer and no manufacturer can apply for it.
