The four qualities of good design

On the first floor of the Red Dot Design Museum we present our visitors with the 71 best products of 2024 - the current milestones in international product design. They fulfil the four qualities of good design, set new standards in their respective industries and clearly stand out from the competition in functional and aesthetic terms thanks to their innovative strength and design. But what makes them milestones?

There were and are many different approaches to defining good design. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, good design is multi-layered - a product should be convincing on several levels. To achieve this, according to Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of Red Dot, it must combine the four qualities of good design: the quality of function, seduction, use and responsibility, as he explains in his book "The Form of Success". These qualities are differently developed in each product. Some products are more about seduction, others are more about use, etc. However, none of these four aspects should be completely absent.

In order to make this principle comprehensible to visitors, each of the milestone products has a product label. On this label, a graphic shows how strongly the four qualities are expressed in each product.
