The kitchen: design and use through the ages
Public tour 10 May 2025 | 14:00 – 16:00 h
Please note: The tour will be conducted in German.
The combined kitchen tour explores the question of what tasks the kitchen fulfils today and how this came about - from pre-industrial times to the present day. In the past, the kitchen was primarily the strictly functional ‘realm of women’, but in recent decades it has opened up and developed into the centre of many flats and houses, where a large part of (family) life takes place beyond cooking and baking. The tour illustrates this change using examples from the past (Ruhr Museum) and present (Red Dot Design Museum) and provides exciting insights into social and technological developments in the context of the kitchen.
