Starting 18 Dezember 2024, the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, in collaboration with designaustria – a knowledge centre and advocacy group for design in Austria – will host the exhibition “Best of Austrian Design”. At the heart of the exhibition are award-winning design projects from Austria that have been honoured with the “Staatspreis Design” (National Design Prize) and the Austrian Interior Design Award. The exhibition showcases Austria’s design excellence through works that focus on themes such as progressiveness, societal relevance and sustainability. The exhibition will be open until 9 February 2025.
Design Diversity from the Alpine Country
Among the exhibits are products from well-known Austrian manufacturers such as woom, Swarovski-Optik, Bene office furniture and Otto Bock Healthcare Products, as well as works from Austrian companies and design studios that are not yet as well known over here. The presentation of these design products and concepts is intended to raise awareness of outstanding Austrian design and to strengthen Austria’s position as a focal business hub.
Awards for Austrian Design
The Austrian “Staatspreis Design” is awarded every two years by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Economy. Organised by designaustria, knowledge centre and advocacy group for design in Austria, the award competition recognises innovative and creative three-dimensional design and thus contributes to fostering design awareness within the domestic economy.
The Austrian Interior Design Award is conferred by the Building Innovation Cluster (BIC) of Business Upper Austria. The aim of the award is to highlight excellence in the field of interior design. Established in 2000, the BIC is an industry network that supports companies in the furniture and wood sectors and has extensive experience in the implementation of large-scale projects.
Moreover, several of the presented products, manufacturers and design studios have not only been recognised in national competitions, but have also been honoured within the Red Dot Design Award, one of the most prestigious international design competitions. Notable awardees include, for example, woom, VELLO bike, Otto Bock, Sunbeam, KISKA, ESKA Lederhandschuhfabrik, Georg Bechter Licht, buero bauer, Design Ballendat and miramondo public design.
