Special exhibition 24 September 2015 – 31 December 2015
In 2015, Philips celebrates its 90-year design history. In recognition of its continuously good design achievements, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen is dedicating its own studio exhibition to the company. From 24 September 2015, "Products for Generations: 90 Years of Philips Design" will show around 50 exhibits that illustrate the Dutch manufacturer's current understanding of design.
Founded in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in 1891, Philips recognised early on that design was a key element of corporate success: in 1925, under the leadership of Louis Kalff, the company established its own design department, which was continuously developed and expanded over the following nine decades. In the design work, the understanding for a better handling of technological products is of central importance. Today, they are characterised by a clear design language that offers the user maximum functionality combined with intuitive usability.
"Products for Generations: 90 Years of Philips Design" shows around 40 exhibits that were awarded in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015. In addition, models of the "Philishave" from the past 20 years or so are on display: The shavers illustrate the evolution of the product and thus highlight Philips' continuous innovative power and design strength, which contribute significantly to the success of the technology company.
A cross-section of Philips products is presented in two areas: While products from the household, consumer electronics, personal care and life science sectors are on display on the third floor, shapely and innovative luminaires are shown in the boiler tunnel on the second floor.
Since 1988, the Dutch company has received 184 Red Dot Awards. In 1998, the Philips design team also received the honorary title "Red Dot: Design Team of the Year".
In addition, visitors can learn about the state of the art of international product design in the world's largest exhibition of contemporary design. From imaginative USB sticks and iconic accessories to Audi cars hanging from the ceiling: the Red Dot Design Museum Essen presents around 2,000 exhibits from around 45 nations on five levels. The beautifully designed everyday objects bring visitors closer to cultural or national characteristics and inform them about current trends.
