From 10 July 2018, the Red Dot Design Museum on the grounds of the Zollverein World Heritage Site in Essen, Germany, presents two special exhibitions, showcasing award-winning design highlights from all areas of life. Until 5 August, visitors can discover the best products of the year in “Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018”. Moreover, they can experience the outstanding achievements of Phoenix Design, the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year 2018, in the exhibition “PHOENIX – First. Now. Next.” until 19 August.

Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018
From Australia to the Netherlands to Vietnam – designers and manufacturers from around the world are a guest of the Red Dot Design Museum Essen with their latest, award-winning creations. The exhibition “Design on Stage” presents around 1,800 exhibits and thus the status quo in global industrial design. Moreover, the prize-winning designs provide an outlook on the future of our product culture.

On show are objects from various fields of everyday life, which received a distinction for their design excellence in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018. Only persuasive design achievements receive a distinction from the jury in this international competition and thus their well-deserved place in the Red Dot Design Museum.

On five floors and approximately 4,000 m², the exhibits invite visitors to discover current aesthetic and economic developments in product design. The best designs, which were granted the highest award in the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best, are exhibited in a separate area: the 69 outstanding products of the year are on show in the White Hall and White Box on the ground floor of the former boiler house.

Chairs, luminaires, refrigerators or sports equipment – in order to assure themselves of the objects’ excellent quality, visitors are invited to touch and test many of them. Because one thing is for sure: good design manifests in use. Furthermore, the awarded designs open the mind for the new, such as cultural characteristics or objects, which visitors do not encounter in their everyday life.

PHOENIX – First. Now. Next.

The honorary title “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year” literally pokes out of all distinctions and is the highest appreciation of a sustainable design policy. Since 1988, a team has been selected annually that has distinguished itself at the highest level through its continuously innovative design achievements. In 2018, the honorary title goes to Phoenix Design with its 75 employees in Stuttgart, Munich and Shanghai. Founded by Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr in 1987, the interdisciplinary, internationally oriented team received more than 200 Red Dot distinctions so far.

In line with tradition, the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year is presenting its design achievements in its own self-designed and realised exhibition in the Red Dot Design Museum. “PHOENIX – First. Now. Next.” showcases products which are geared to the needs of the user and to a self-explanatory interaction. With these, the design studio creates real brand experiences for its clients and new impetus for the industry. Following the leitmotif “Without a past there is no future”, the designers from Phoenix draw on their long-term experience.

The defined goal is to make the world a little better. This is accomplished by “logic, moral and magic”, which characterise products of Phoenix Design and which have made the studio become a ground-breaker for German brand and design history. With new disciplines and methods, the designers uncover opportunities and create together with their clients – among them Duravit, Loewe, Hansgrohe, Huawei, Trumpf, Vorwerk and Zeiss – products for a new and better future.
