On Sunday, 12 April 2015, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen draws attention to German designs. From 3 – 4.30 p.m., a public tour under the motto “German Design Standards” explains that domestic products set standards on the international stage, regarding the qualitative workmanship and also in relation to design.

Strongly influenced by the Bauhaus style and Ulm School of Design, German design is characterised today by a well-made relationship between tradition and the future. Therefore, “Made in Germany” is not only a designation of origin, but even more a quality seal which became a symbol of high-class engineers’ work and quality products. The mark of goods which was introduced at the end of the 19th century is appreciated by consumers as a proof of very high product quality today – although it was initiated to preserve British consumers from “inferior” products and copies from Germany at that time.

During the one and a half hour tour of the former boiler house of Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, visitors will meet German product designs from various living environments: modern lifestyle accessories, innovative consumer electronics or well-shaped furniture. All of them were awarded with the internationally acclaimed Red Dot quality seal for their outstanding design.
