The Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany, is not a museum in the classical sense. It underlines this fact once again: Since it enjoys popularity, the house, located on the grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein coal mine, opens its doors also on Mondays from 7 March 2016. Until 31 October 2016, the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design can be visited every day from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Besides the additional opening on Mondays and the permission for visitors to touch the exhibits, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen is distinguished from other museums by its special form of presentation. Visitors encounter a thematically structured exposition which is enriched by its “breakers”: Unexpected or uncommon staging of products, which crack the museum structures, can be found in many places of the house. They provide the visitors with new ways of approaching the topic of design.

A vehicle has to be placed horizontally on the ground? In the Red Dot Design Museum it is pending from the roof and welcomes visitors in the fascinating world of design with its doors wide open. By presenting the exhibits outside the context of their common usage, visitors experience everyday items in a completely new way, thus gaining an understanding of the basics of award-winning design.

Opening hours 7 March until 31 October 2016:
Mon – Sun: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Last entrance: 5 p.m.
(Subject to change)
